Creating an e-ink touchscreen device that conceptually re-imagines the call-light communication at Henry Mayo Hospital.

This 3D prototype is a redesign of Henry Mayo Hospital's patient call-light communication that allows patients to request specific needs to either nurses or patient-care assistants.

Coded in Python, the GUI would be run on a Raspberry Pi in an e-ink touchscreen host. The device would be easily accessible and would feature indefinite screen time as a result of the e-ink display.

LIBERATORY DESIGN PROCESS

NOTICING THE PROBLEM

At the Henry Mayo Hospital, call-light communication between nurses and patients is crucial to ensuring timely delivery of nursing care to patients of need. However, there are significant flaws in the current Rauland Responder III system that impact the satisfaction of patients and the quality of provided care, as well as the triage assessment of patient needs.

Patients often request for their Registered Nurses (RNs) to provide care that the Patient Care Assistant (PCAs) has the responsibility to provide, as well as vice versa. This has created a frustration amongst nurses that patients with slight annoyances are taking time away from those that require urgent care.

In addition, there are frequent miscommunications between nurses about who is able to provide the requested care, including the parameters of nurses taking breaks or nurses tending to a patient that is in dire need of help.

IDEATING THE SOLUTION

The prototype and user interface were designed to simultaneously increase the comfort of patients seeking timely and essential care and improve the workflow of nurses seeking to tend to patients' needs.

I coded the GUI using Python, which would be uploaded to a Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi data would be displayed on an e-ink electronic touchscreen.

THE PITCH

Henry Mayo could implement this technology into the five nursing units. Doing so would improve the workflow of nurses, which could result in timely care for patients in need and the comfort of patients.

WHAT I DID

OBSERVED FLAWS IN HOSPITAL WORKFLOW, EXAMINED EXISTING RAULAND-RESPONDER III CALL-LIGHT, CONDUCTED SURVEY ON NURSES' PERCEPTIONS OF CALL-LIGHTS, DESIGNED PROTOTYPE IN FUSION 360, CONDUCTED FEASIBILITY STUDY ON 20 NURSES
